Fandoms That Inspire Me (With Pictures!) (February Fandom Fest)
Here is my entry for selenic76's February Fandom Fest!

Fandom is very important to me. Thanks to my fandoms I met all of you, amazing people, I have a chance to share my love for things I like, read about things I love and write about things that interest me. Fandom inspires me to read more, to write, to create, and it's a really amazing feeling.

I can talk about my favourite shows, movies, comic books, games and books with people who love them to. All my pairings and OTPs make me incredibly happy, and so do all the amazing friendships and characters.

Which is why I decided to mention fandoms that make me happy, those in which I'm most active at the moment, and those that currently inspire me the most (with pictures of some things I like most about each fandom!):

1. DRAGON AGE

Dragon Age is, I admit, my favourite fandom lately, and one that provides me with things that none of my other fandoms do.

Let me list of canon things that make me happy:
- canon gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual and trassexual characters
- canon gay and lesbian relationships (your main characters have so many choices of relationships - and can stay single, too)
- you can make a team (party consisting of 4 characters) made entirely of LGBTQ characters
- you can make a team made entirely out of female characters
- there are many beautiful friendships and it's amazing
- there are so many different characters in each game, each unique, with their own strengths, fears, personalities, and I find even minor characters who appear only briefly incredibly intriguing. There is a lot of diversity
- the whole universe is so large, the worldbuilding and its development is really intriguing, and there are so many aspects of it that are open to exploring that I keep finding out new things every time I play the games
- sometimes I spend hours reading codex entries and trivia about this world and its story
- all the games are connected and create one estoryline, but things are explained in each of them so it's possible to choose which one you want to try (if for some reason you don't want to play all the games).

And there are more. There are so many fics for it: popular subjects, unpopular subjects, crack ideas, so many different pairings and friendship - the fandom is really inspired.

I have almost 300 prompts saved for this fandom, and I really, really want to write something for so many different pairings, friendships and characters. It's a fandom for which I write the most currently.

Dragon Age

2. STAR TREK

All the series, all the films, the cartoons, I enjoyed them all. In each ST-related production I found something I like - be it a plotline, the chracters, relationship, music, random trivia, the cast... and doesn't matter how many times I re-watch some of the shows or movies, I will never get tired of them. While I don't create as much fanworks for it, I spend so much time reading trivia, fanfics, re-watching... I love it to pieces. This is such a huge fandom, there is so much to explore, so much to read, and every time I re-watch something ST-related, or read random ST articles, I learn something new. I love it.

Star Trek

3. MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE

This is a special fandom, because what makes me happy about it are the amazing fanworks, people's creativity, theories and ideas. Don't get me wrong, I like some of the films, some characters make me so happy (Sam, Sif, the Guardians of the Galaxy, to name a few), but the inspiration MCU provides as a whole is what intrigues me most. It's such a huge fandom consisting of so many films and shows, and including so many characters, and while I don't like some of the things that had happened, I love how MCU inspires me (so many fix-it fics...). There is so many pairings, so many friendships, so many fanworks about different aspects of the movies and shows to explore, it's amazing how many ideas MCU inspires in its fandom.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

4. BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

This is an amazing show that never fails to cheer me up. For the last three seasons it continues to be one of the best shows I've seen and even the plotlines I'm not really interested in are well written and enjoyable. It's a sweet and funny series, full of great friendship, teamwork and amazing, diverse characters. I love how it always manages to make me smile, I love re-watching it and it definitely has a special place in my heart. I think everyone should check out: there is amazing teamwork, all the characters are well written, there are female friendships and diversity... it's beautiful. I just had to include it in my list.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

5. ARROW/THE FLASH/LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

Another huge fandom that I find very inspiring in terms of the characters, ideas and possibilities it provides. I admit, when I took a small break from TV shows I kind of forgot about it, but after Legends of Tomorrow started, it managed to catch my attention right from the start and make me interested in all the shows again (especially in the aspects I like most). I love Legends of Tomorrow, this team, those characters, and The Flash and Arrow still include characters I care about and those I like to read about. Not to mention that the whole 'verse is full of actors and actresses I absolutely adore. This fandom collected so many different characters from DC universe and I love reading how those characters, even if sometimes they have never met in canon, interact together in fics (and on screen).
For some time I've been collecting prompts for this fandom, and hopefully one day I will actually write something because, as I said, I love people's ideas. And I would love to write fics about so many characters, friendship and pairings (some of them unpopular, I guess XD)

The only "fandom" we share in this case is Arrow/Flash/LoT but these shows are seriously like the air that I breath. So wonderful. And they give me life. And LoT might be the best thing that happened on TV in a long time =D
Megan Moonlight: singhmegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 07:00 pm (UTC)
LoT makes me so happy lately, too - I love this team so much! I'm really, really enjoying it.

I just wish I could write some fics for this fandom XD
endeniendeni on February 23rd, 2016 08:49 pm (UTC)
Oh, yes, I'm so obsessed with MCU, the Trekverse and the Arrowverse, good choices. *nods*
Indeed, seeing all the creative fanworks fan can come up with is the best way of being in a fandom. *g*
(And I wish I could get into Dragon Age, it seems pretty interesting, but, alas, I'm really no gamer...)
Megan Moonlight: datamegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 07:31 pm (UTC)
I'm glad we share fandoms ;) All of them are so creative and so active! It's awesome.

Dragon Age is honestly my favourite fandom right now. I don'r only play a lot, but it's the fandom for which I wrote so many fics already - it's very inspiring (and I keep recommending it to everyone, even to people who are not gamers *lol*). It's very engaging and all the characters and storylines are very interesting :)
endeniendeni on February 26th, 2016 08:38 pm (UTC)
Oh, yes, Dragon Age has me very curious but since I don't play I really know nothing about it, not even the main characters/storylines etc.
In the past I enjoyed fanworks about fandoms I didn't know but to do so I need at least some kind of intro post/primer... ;(
Megan Moonlight: fenrismegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 08:48 pm (UTC)
When it comes to info, checking out the wiki page of Dragon Age (pages of all the 3 parts separately) is a good first step. Once you read about the main plotlines you can find more detailed articles at wiki devoted only to Dragon Age. It's one huge story and you keep finding out new things about it all the time :) It's one of the reasons why I love it so much.

I can spend hours on reading wiki articles only XD

I can try to summarizing the basics, too, if you're interested :)
endeniendeni on February 26th, 2016 09:06 pm (UTC)
/I can try to summarizing the basics, too, if you're interested :)/ - Aw, would you do that for me? *_* I just finds wiki pages so sterile and I always end up discouraged...
Megan Moonlight: fenrismegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 10:20 pm (UTC)
Sure, I love talking about Dragon Age anyway, so it'll be fun :)

I'll start with the basic storylines (I'll try not to reveal too many major spoilers, just in case) and after that you'll tell me if you want to know more.

The story of the first game starts when your main character (three possible races: human, elf or dwarf; three possible classes: warrior, rogue, mage - all having its own unique background and personal story which influences some part of dialogues and options) being recruited to an order of warriors, Grey Wardens, because the world is in danger - creatures called darkspawn are attacking, and your character has to travel to numerous places to build an army that could defeat the them. In the meantime you meet numerous characters you can recruit for help (memebers of your team). They can become your friends, lovers or enemies, and they can agree or disagree with your choices. You travel a lot, save people, help them, complete quests, fight demons (and dragons) and learn more about what's happening and how to save the world.

The second game focuses on the personal story of Hawke (the character you control). Some time after the end of the first game Hawke and his/her family run away from their home because it was attacked by darkspawn, and they travel to Kirkwall, the city where the main plotline takes place. There Hawke makes life for himself/herself and family, helping people, earning money, and later gets involved in the conflict between mages and templars (the huge conflict in all the games - you have to choose if you support mages or the templars). Not only Hawke has to solve his/her own problems, but also they're the one who is always asked to help either mages or templars - and you have to side with only one of them. Here you also meet characters who can join your team, and Hawke can meet some characters that appeared in the first game :)

In the third game the world is in danger again, this time attacked by an old being who wants to take over the world (which is linked to what happens in the second game) - he found an artifact that could help him. Your character, the Inquisitor, interfers in his plans, stealing the power the evil guy wanted. Now the Inquisitor has to lead his/her people to save the world, and also find out how did he/she acquired the power the evil guy wanted. As in the first game, you choose the race of your character (there is one additional race - Qunari), and each character has their own background. You travel around two countries to find out what the evil being is planning, collecting information and helping those in need, and trying to prevent the evil guy from destroying everything. The Inquisitor also can meet the characters from the previous games (some things are conditioned, depending on your choices from previous games).

Those are the basics. As I said, the plotlines are connected, you see various characters from all three games interacting (depending on your choicecs), you have to make a lot of choices that influence your main storyline, in your conversations you decide on the personality of your main characters. In each game you have possibilities of making friends/enemies and possibilities of romance (also including LGBTQ characters and romance options). All the characters from your teams are unique, have their own agendas, can agree or disagree with you... there is a lot going on.

(The character from my icon is from the second game :D). He's one of my favourites.

So, maybe it'll be easier now to answer your questions, if you have any, because I'm not sure what you'd like me to focus on (if you want to know more) :)
endeniendeni on February 27th, 2016 12:01 pm (UTC)
Oh, wow, that's a great overview, thank you so much! <3
I think what I find most difficult with gaming fandom is this freedom of choosing you character's gender and stuff, it just makes it more confusing to me from the outside... :D
There's this terrific Mass Effect podfic I listened to that is so AU even I understood what was going on and it made me curious for more Mass Effect stuff but the worldbuilding looked *so* complicated. Let alone the whole confusing famale/male protagonist.
And now I see all this Dragon Age podfic being created (yes, I'm addicted to podfic LOL) and I was getting kind of bummed I wouldn't get to enjoy it...
By any chance, do you happen to have any recs laying around? Stuff I could start with that don't require a huge amount of canon knowledge from me? *g*
Megan Moonlight: kremmegan_moonlight on February 27th, 2016 07:35 pm (UTC)
I'm glad I could help :)

I shall start by giving you a vid rec. It's a vid from the game, a scene about one of my favourite pairings (male!Trevelyan/Iron Bull) - it shows the humour in the game and one of the romance options: *HERE*

Now, to the rest :)

I do have recs for fics. So many of them, actually. If you don't mind me self-promoting, I write fics that are mainly spoiler-free. I'll link you to a few of them and give you links to the characters pages so you can see and read something about the characters I focus on :)

1. Skyhold Café - it's a coffee shop AU and includes one my favourite pairings from the third part of the game: male!Trevelyan/Iron Bull and a few other characters (canon free XD).

2. Axe vs Arrow - friendship/action piece about Krem and Sera, two of my favourite characters, who are absolutely badass.

3. A Toast to Us - female!Trevelyan/Josephine, a fic that focuses on their romance.

4. The Most Awesome Arcanist - Sera/Dagna, get-together fic, inspired by a prompt that made me ship it.

5. Warriors' Choice - male!Trevelyan/Iron Bull again, where Bul comforts Trevelyan.

Characters:
Main characters, player-controlled: Trevelyan, Adaar, Cadash, Lavellan, Hawke, The Warden

Others: Iron Bull, Sera, Dorian, Cole, Krem (he's on my icon), Cassandra, Blackwall, Harding, Josephine, Dagna.
There are many more characters, and if you're curious about more of them, you can check their pages, too :)

If you want more links you can check my recs tag: *HERE*, and *HERE* I posted some links for fics I wrote recently- I'm posting a lot of recs and fics for DA lately :)

They really are :) They make me so happy!

Great choices! <3 And I only know games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect through fandom, but I'm happy they exist with all their great LGBT storylines.
Megan Moonlight: kremmegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 08:52 pm (UTC)
I spent more time playing Dragon Age than Mass Effect, but I love both. But especially Dragon Age. It's the fandom that always maneges to keep me interested, there is more and more to read since it's a very active fandom fic-wise, but I also spend so much time playing and just enjoying the story and the characters - I love it. There's always something new to find out about the characters and the story, which is just awesome.
bearshortybearshorty on February 24th, 2016 01:25 am (UTC)

I'm not a gamer and don't know much of anything about popular games but your description of Dragon Age sounds very intriguing. I can see why it appeals to you so much. If I was a gamer, it would be my kind of thing.

I love Star Trek to pieces. TNG was the first TV show that I was really into - I would tape all the episodes. I love all the Mark Watches recaps now; makes me relieve my favorite episodes.  But it's Voyager that holds my fandom heart because something about those characters that just appeals to me. Janeway/Chakotay were my first OTP even before I knew what shipping was.

I saw the first season of Brooklyn 99 and really loved it but I didn't have time last year so I fell behind. I really want to catch up on that show.

Megan Moonlight: datamegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 09:13 pm (UTC)
Dragon Age is my favourite game ever. I like many others, but this one keeps me interested (great plotlines, characters and relationships, but also the fact that this worldbuilding is awesome and I keep finding out something new every time I play the game or read articles - which I really love). It never fails to cheer me up and inspire me :D

There are also Dragon Age books, if it's something you'd be interested in :)

For me it's difficult to pick a favourite Star Trek series, since I like each of them for something different. I just like them all in general :)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine had a special place in my heart. It's series that never disappointed me, always manages to make me smile and I just love those characters and how their work together. There aren't many comedy series that grip me as much as this one.
Three Days of Violence Against Vegtables: MCU - Lady Siff/We are onelil_1337 on February 24th, 2016 02:38 am (UTC)
Brooklyn 99 always makes me happy even when there are things I don't like such as Jake/Amy there is still so much more to love.

MCU I go back and forth on. There are things I love and things I really don't like at all. Some days I feel inspired and others I just want nothing to do with it at all.
Megan Moonlight: brooklynmegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 08:39 pm (UTC)
B99 is one of the best things ever :D Each episode makes me so happy and there aren't many comedy series that make me as happy.

I know what you mean about MCU. There are many things I don't like about MCU at all, but in the end, when I just ignore canon I don't like and the not cool parts of the fandom itself, I still love some of those characters and people create amazing, really amazing works (many of them so much more interesting than what happens in canon XD) - and those are the parts I like to focus on :)
Three Days of Violence Against Vegtables: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D - Sitwell/believelil_1337 on February 27th, 2016 01:12 am (UTC)
One of the best things about MCU is that there is so much canon you can pick and choose what you want to use.

True. It's very useful sometimes.

I love your other choices too.

They really are. It's always great to see fandoms that are just so nice... and the show makes me so happy in general <3

Wonderful post ♥

I swear after I've written on a paper today will be day I catch up on The Flash - I'm so behind!
Megan Moonlight: singhmegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 07:04 pm (UTC)
I'm glad you enjoyed it :D

I still have a few episodes of The Flash to watch, too, but I hope to catch up soon :) I'm kind of focusing on Legends of Tommorow more, lately XD

Great choices, though I haven't checked out DA or B99 yet. Fandom is really an amazing way to make friends though
Megan Moonlight: batman/flashmegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 07:05 pm (UTC)
I definitely recommend and B99 and DA - they're both my favourites right now. B99 is such a nice, heartwarming series that never fails to make me smile and DA games are very interesting and engaging :)
Selenic76: HeartCandyselenic76 on February 25th, 2016 06:54 am (UTC)
So much love in this post! \o/ I also love Star Trek, though I haven't seen all series. I've seen TOS, TNG, and Voyager, and some of DS9. TOS, the series and the movies, are my favourites, though TNG is a close second because Data will always have a special place in my heart ^_^

Also love MCU, but I've been a little afraid to take more than the occasional peek into that fandom, just because there's so much to love there :) All the fanart alone! So many stories too, there just isn't enough time in the world to go through all the wonderful stuff :)

And I've been so intrigued by Dragon Age since I saw a pic of male Hawke and Fenris somewhere ;) Your post made me once again consider buying the game/games, just because I love the fact that there are so many romancing options. (And the price has come down a bit too, yay!) I'm afraid I'd get addicted to it though...

Thank you so much for this awesome post, and for sharing the love ^_^
Megan Moonlight: fenrismegan_moonlight on February 26th, 2016 09:32 pm (UTC)
I like all the ST series, so it's difficult for me to pick favourites. I just enjoy them all.

I don't delve too deep into MCU as well XD It's a really huge fandom and not all parts are good (and in canon and in fandom *lol*), so I mostly stick to the parts I like and enjoy, and those I know make me happy. Those parts only are enough to keep me inspired because people have so many great ideas. Not to mention all the awesome prompts...

Male!Hawke/Fenris is my OTP for Dragon Age, actually :) While I multiship almost all the other characters, to me male!Hawke and Fenris are always together forever.
I love all those games to pieces. I'm spending so much time on playing, reading articles and fics...

And to convince you some more, have a video of one of the possible romance scenes from the third part of the game (it's another of my favourite scenes EVER XD): *HERE*
Selenic76: RodneyMineselenic76 on February 27th, 2016 07:28 am (UTC)
I'm convinced, I'm convinced! :D

That video was so much fun ^_^ If all of the game has that kind of humour and feels, it'll be wonderful.

And then I found some vids introducing the voice actors for the characters in the series, and there were so many familiar faces! Felicia Day, Kate Mulgrew (wrote Jane Mulgrew at first, because I was thinking of Janeway :D), Gareth David-Lloyd, Claudia Black, and others! Oh, and the voices of male Hawke and Fenris, ♥♥♥! Voices to make you swoon for sure ;)

I'm so getting at least Dragon Age II, and I'll see about the others later :D You've certainly made me love this game already :)

Edited at 2016-02-27 08:25 am (UTC)
Megan Moonlight: fenrismegan_moonlight on March 1st, 2016 08:23 pm (UTC)
Yay! :D

The humour in the games (also including banter and all the snark XD), is awesome. Those games know how to make me emotional (some moments made me very, very emotional).

All the voice actors do such an awesome job! I love voice casting to pieces, though it does help that I get to hear some of my favourite actors' and actreses' voices ;)
Gideon Emery is so good as Fenris! His voice is just amazing *.*

I hope you'll enjoy it :D
Selenic76: HeartCandyselenic76 on March 2nd, 2016 09:22 am (UTC)
I already am! ^_^ Though learning the game mechanics is taking some time, and all those friendship/rivalry things are tricky, especially with Fenris, since I really don't want to just go with the 'just hate all mages' option. I already got to flirting with him a few times, ♥! ^_^ (I'm playing a rogue)

I caught a cold and have the rest of the week off, and I'm going to spend it resting, and learning about the game :) I suspect I'll star over a couple of times before I get the hang of things, but I'm loving the game already :)

And now I need DAII icons, I love yours!
Megan Moonlight: fenrismegan_moonlight on March 2nd, 2016 08:09 pm (UTC)
The mechanics get easier once you get into it :) All the games differ a bit when it comes to technical side, but they're quite easy to grasp once you're accustomed to one game, at least.

The friendships/rivalries are tricky in all the games, since your relationships with characters sometimes determine if you'll unlock their personal quests (which is nice, and makes things interesting). There are some characters with whom I just never agree, doesn't matter how much I try to change my answers XD

Majority of my characters are mages (though I also pay other classes), and I'm always pro-mage and fighting for mage freedom XD It made my "rivalmance" with Fenris a bit tricky, but I love how their relationship progresses later (I won't spoil anything, dont worry ;D).

Thank you, it was a gift :) I was planning to make some DA icons sooner or later myself, so I'll think of something :D
Selenic76: HeartCandyselenic76 on March 3rd, 2016 06:44 am (UTC)
Oh please please make icons! \o/

I'm going to try and friend-romance Fenris first, just for the challenge :) Plus I'm learning a lot about the game that way, because I have to do retakes and read about stuff online :)

I just started a new game, rogue again, and I'm making save points before every bigger Fenris scene, so I can go back to look at them again ^_^ I'd love to rivalmance him also, maybe I'll do that as a mage :)
Megan Moonlight: fenrismegan_moonlight on March 5th, 2016 09:03 pm (UTC)
As soon as I get some good screencaps :) I kind of forgot to take them when I was playing all the games and, unfortunately, I don't have as much time for playing... but once I find screencaps, I'll work on some icons :D

I never managed to friend-mance Fenris, doesn't matter who my Garrett was XD I always supported mages and always wanted to show him that not all mages are bad.
Selenic76: DeanFacepalmselenic76 on March 8th, 2016 07:43 pm (UTC)
Yes, friendmancing Fenris can be such a pain :D I just had to pick the most difficult guy to win over, didn't I ;)

I admit, I found some help online, when things weren't working no matter what I did. (I'm not that picky about finding out everything on my own, I just want to enjoy the game.) There is a way to play the middle ground, which is hating blood mages, but still trying to help mages that aren't really bad. And doing Fenris' companion quests right really helped, as well as giving him the book gift :)

Looking forward to ActIII, and the rest of the romance :)

Oh and btw, loved the Friendly Concern bit from Varric! :D And how the others comment about Hawke and Fenris' relationship ^_^
